“From War, With Love”
- Comfort Women series
A portrait and story series on a community of World War II ‘Comfort Women’ (the lolas, which in Tagalog means ‘grandma’).
Photojournalists have reported their stories over the years - to reveal the horrific story of war. These stories definitely need to be told.
Yet to me it is equally important to tell the story of how the Lolas have chosen to live their lives after the war, the courage and vulnerability they live out in sharing their stories, and how they have chosen to love and have faith again even after life has dealt them such a bad hand.
Their faith, openness and resilience - was what blew my mind.
To meet these living testimonies of humanity’s strong will and healing, of what ultimately triumphs - was truly surreal and powerful.
As they are all in their 90s, I feel more the urgency to share their stories. Their life stories must not be forgotten - so that we can be a witness to such power and resilience, and in how we can also choose to live our lives moving forth.
